Who is JAKIM?

JAKIM (Jabatan Kemajuan Islam Malaysia / Department of Islamic Development Malaysia) is the Malaysian federal government agency responsible for Islamic affairs, including halal certification. Established in 1997 and seated in Putrajaya, JAKIM issues the Malaysia Halal certification through its Halal Management Division against national standards such as MS 1500 for halal food — Malaysia was the first country in the world to publish a government-backed national halal standard. As one of the few government-run halal authorities globally, backed by Malaysian law and mandatory site audits, JAKIM is widely regarded as a benchmark for halal assurance. It also recognises foreign halal certification bodies — 85 bodies across 47 countries as at February 2025 — so that products certified overseas can carry or convert to the Malaysia Halal mark. For Australian shoppers, this matters in two ways: Malaysian-made products on Australian shelves carry the green JAKIM Malaysia Halal logo, and several Australian certifiers are JAKIM-recognised so their certificates are accepted for export to Malaysia. A product's Malaysia Halal certificate can be verified on JAKIM's official portal at halal.gov.my.

Government halal authority

JAKIM, the Malaysia Halal mark & Australia

Unlike most halal certifiers worldwide — which are private or community bodies — JAKIM is a federal government department. It issues the Malaysia Halal certification in-house through its Halal Management Division, against national standards published by the Department of Standards Malaysia. The green Malaysia Halal mark you see on Malaysian-made products in Australian stores is issued under this scheme, and each certificate can be checked on JAKIM’s portal at halal.gov.my.
