Certification Process

How halal certification typically works

Halal certification follows a structured nine-stage process designed to verify that every ingredient, supplier, and production step meets Islamic dietary standards. Each certificate is issued for a three-year cycle: an initial certification or recertification year, followed by two annual surveillance audits. For specific procedural details, refer to ICCV directly.

  1. 1

    Application

The manufacturer submits a formal application to ICCV, including company details, products to be certified, and any establishment numbers.

  2. 2

    Agreement & fee acceptance

The certification agreement is signed and fees are accepted. Scope, timeline, and obligations on both sides are formally established.

  3. 3

    Supplier documentation

Ingredient lists, supplier certificates, processing aids, and packaging details are submitted. Every input is traced back to its source.

  4. 4

    Stage 1 audit (on-site)

Auditors visit the facility to verify documented procedures: how cleaning, segregation, ingredient handling, and worker training are intended to operate.

  5. 5

    Stage 2 audit (on-site)

Auditors verify the records and evidence that documented procedures are actually being followed in day-to-day operations.

  6. 6

    Process & ingredient verification (on-site)

Each ingredient and production step is reviewed against Islamic dietary law. Any flagged input must be substantiated or replaced before certification proceeds.

  7. 7

    Certification committee review

An impartial committee reviews every record from application through audit. Auditors do not approve their own work; the committee decides whether certification is granted.

  8. 8

    Certificate issued

On approval, the manufacturer receives a certificate with a unique number, valid for three years. Products can carry the ICCV halal mark on their packaging.

  9. 9

Ongoing monitoring & annual surveillance audit

Certification is not one-and-done. Year 1 covers the initial certification or recertification. Years 2 and 3 are surveillance audits that verify ongoing compliance. After year 3, the cycle starts again with recertification.
