Cheapest Halal Meat in Australia (2026): How to Pay Less While Lamb Is Dear
Nobody publishes halal meat prices, so this is not a price list. It is what the numbers that do exist say, and the ways of buying that usually cost less.

Why Is Lamb So Expensive in Australia Right Now?
Because there is less of it: Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) reported a record Trade Lamb Indicator of 1,244 cents a kilo, carcase weight, in the week ending 12 July 2026, and said tight supply drove it. Mutton hit 916 cents the same week.
Prices have come off that peak. MLA’s weekly market wrap on 2 October 2026 had the Trade Lamb Indicator at 1,096 cents and said lamb indicators were easing. These are saleyard prices for the whole carcase, what processors pay for the animal, not the price on a butcher’s tag. They still matter, because they are the cost every shop starts from.

Is Halal Meat More Expensive Than Regular Meat?
We could not find out by how much: we found no published halal shop prices from the ABS, the ACCC or MLA, and no published figure for a halal premium.
What we can show is the plant side. 84 of the 105 active sheep, lamb and mutton plants in the HalalHQ meat lookup hold a halal certificate on our records. Our records do not cover every plant in the country, but most of the plants we hold are halal certified, so certification at the plant is common, not an extra step. What changes from shop to shop is whether the pack carries a halal mark, and what that shop charges. Our guide to whether Australian lamb is halal explains why a halal plant does not automatically mean a halal-labelled pack.

Where Is the Cheapest Place to Buy Halal Meat?
There is no single cheapest shop: prices are set shop by shop and change week to week, so the saving comes from how you buy rather than where.
- Buy bigger from a halal butcher. Ask for a price on a forequarter, a half lamb or a mixed box, cut and packed for the freezer.
- Compare the price per kilogram on the label, not the pack price. A bigger tray can still cost more per kilo.
- Check the supermarket halal ranges. ANIC lists EL-Amin as the Coles Supermarket halal brand. Whatever the brand, look for the halal mark and certifier on each pack.
- Ask about mutton and goat for slow cooking. At the saleyard, mutton sat well below lamb in July 2026.
Which Halal Butchers Do People Use Most?
These are the most-reviewed fully halal butchers on HalalHQ in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Most-reviewed is not the same as cheapest, and we hold no prices for any of them, but a busy butcher is a good place to ask for a bulk quote. Tap a name for the address and opening hours.
Which Cuts of Halal Lamb Cost Less?
Shanks, mince and forequarter cuts are the cheaper end, and MLA’s own recipe books have said so for years. Its 2013 Lamb Masterpieces book credits the shank’s spread onto menus to its “economical price point”, and its 2011 volume calls lamb mince “an economical way” to cook lamb.
Those books are old and give no prices, so treat them as a direction, not a number. In practice, the forequarter (shoulder, neck, shanks) suits the dishes many of us cook anyway: curries, biryani, mandi, stews and slow roasts. If you buy a forequarter whole, the butcher can cut it into curry pieces, shanks and mince for you.
How Long Can I Freeze Halal Meat?
Freeze raw meat and chicken if you will not use it within 2 days, NSW Food Authority advises, and it then keeps its quality for roughly two to six months depending on the cut.
The months below come from a Queensland Health guide built from MLA material. It is a guide to how long meat “can be frozen and still taste good”, not a safety limit, so label every bag with the date and use the oldest first. Bulk buying only saves money if none of it ends up in the bin.
Did this help? Keep HalalHQ free
HalalHQ is independently built and free for the whole community, with no ads and nothing behind a paywall. If this saved you a phone call or a doubtful meal, a small contribution helps cover the servers and data that keep it running.
How Do I Check Cheap Meat Is Really Halal?
Look up the establishment number: the AUS establishment number printed on the pack identifies the plant, and the HalalHQ meat lookup shows whether that plant holds a halal certificate and from which certifier.
A low price is not a warning sign on its own, and a high one is no guarantee. If the pack has no halal mark and the shop cannot tell you the supplier, that is the thing to walk away from. At a halal butcher, ask which plant they buy from; a good one will tell you.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the cheapest halal meat in Australia?
There is no single cheapest shop, because nobody publishes halal meat prices and each butcher and supermarket sets its own. You usually pay less per kilo by buying larger amounts from a halal butcher, choosing cheaper cuts such as forequarter, shanks and mince, and comparing the price per kilogram rather than the pack price.
Why is lamb so expensive in 2026?
Supply is tight. Meat and Livestock Australia reported a record Trade Lamb Indicator of 1,244 cents a kilo carcase weight in the week ending 12 July 2026 and put it down to tight supply. By 2 October 2026 the indicator had eased to 1,096 cents.
Is halal meat more expensive than non-halal meat?
There is no published figure that answers this. On our records, 84 of the 105 active sheep, lamb and mutton plants in the HalalHQ meat lookup hold a halal certificate. Price differences you see are set by each shop, and nobody publishes a halal surcharge.
Is mutton cheaper than lamb?
At the saleyard, yes, in the week MLA reported: its Mutton Indicator was 916 cents a kilo against 1,244 cents for trade lamb in the week ending 12 July 2026. Shop prices differ, but mutton is worth asking about for curries and slow cooking.
How long can I keep halal meat in the freezer?
NSW Food Authority advises freezing raw meat and chicken if you will not use it within 2 days. For how long it stays good, a Queensland Health guide based on MLA material suggests about 2 to 3 months for mince and chops and 4 to 6 months for roasts and whole chickens. That guide is about taste, not safety.
Is cheap halal meat hand slaughtered?
Price tells you nothing about slaughter method. Ask the butcher which plant supplies them, then look up the establishment number from the pack or carton in the HalalHQ meat lookup, which shows that plant’s halal certifier.
