Jeddah Guide

Practical Information in Jeddah

3 places for pilgrims

Currency Exchange & Banking

Practical

Jeddah has numerous currency exchange offices and banks. The best rates are typically found at exchange offices in the city center (Al-Balad area and Tahlia Street), rather than at the airport. Most shops and restaurants accept credit cards. ATMs are widely available throughout the city.

Tips
  • -Airport exchange rates are less favorable. Exchange a small amount on arrival, then visit a city exchange office
  • -Al Rajhi Bank and SNB have ATMs throughout the city with English interfaces
  • -Keep small denominations (1, 5, 10 SAR) for tips and small purchases
  • -The SAR is pegged to the USD at approximately 3.75 SAR per 1 USD

SIM Cards & Connectivity

Practical

SIM cards from the three major Saudi operators (STC, Mobily, Zain) are available at the airport and throughout the city. A tourist SIM with data typically costs 50 to 100 SAR. A valid passport is required for purchase. Free Wi-Fi is available at most hotels, shopping malls, and some restaurants.

Tips
  • -STC is recommended for the best overall coverage
  • -Buy a SIM card at the airport arrivals hall for immediate connectivity
  • -Data-only plans are available if you only need internet access
  • -E-SIM is supported by all three operators if your phone is compatible

Accommodation

Practical

Jeddah offers a wide range of accommodation from budget hotels to luxury resorts. For pilgrims in transit, hotels near the airport or the Haramain train station are most convenient. For longer stays, the Corniche area and Tahlia Street offer more options. Booking well in advance is essential during Hajj and Ramadan seasons.

Tips
  • -If transiting to Makkah, consider staying near the train station or airport
  • -Corniche hotels offer Red Sea views and beach access
  • -Prices increase significantly during Hajj, Ramadan, and school holidays
  • -Use Booking.com, Almosafer, or Agoda for competitive rates
