Hajj Guide

Day 3 of 5 · 10th Dhul Hijjah

Day of Sacrifice (Yawm al-Nahr)

Muzdalifah, Mina, Makkah

Prayer Notes

Pray Fajr at Muzdalifah at its earliest time. After reaching Mina, pray Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha at their regular times, shortened to 2 rakahs (except Maghrib). If you go to Makkah for Tawaf, you may pray there at regular times. The order of rituals on this day (stoning, sacrifice, shaving, Tawaf) is Sunnah. Changing the order is permissible without penalty according to the majority of scholars.

Pray Fajr at Muzdalifah and make dua

Sunnah
Fajr time until just before sunrise

Pray Fajr at Muzdalifah at its earliest time. After Fajr, face the Qiblah and make supplication, remembering Allah and glorifying Him, until the sky becomes very light (just before sunrise). The Prophet (peace be upon him) stood at al-Mash'ar al-Haram (the Sacred Monument in Muzdalifah), faced the Qiblah, and made dua until the light was very bright (Sahih Muslim 1218). Then depart for Mina before sunrise.

Allahumma innaka qulta: ud'uni astajib lakum, wa innaka la tukhlifu-l-mi'ad, fa-inni as'aluka kama hadaytani lil-Islam an la tanzi'ahu minni hatta tatawaffani wa ana Muslim

“O Allah, You have said: 'Call upon Me, I will respond to you,' and You never break Your promise. So I ask You, as You have guided me to Islam, that You do not take it away from me, and that You cause me to die as a Muslim.”

Stone Jamrat al-Aqabah (the large pillar)

Wajib
After sunrise (or after midnight for the weak)

Upon arriving at Mina, proceed to Jamrat al-Aqabah (the largest pillar, also called al-Jamrah al-Kubra). Stone it with 7 pebbles, throwing them one at a time, saying 'Bismillah, Allahu Akbar' with each throw. Stop reciting the Talbiyah before the first throw. The pebbles should be thrown at the pillar (or into the basin) from the lower level. The Prophet (peace be upon him) threw pebbles at Jamrat al-Aqabah after the sun had risen on the Day of Nahr (Sahih al-Bukhari 1746).

For Men

Stone Jamrat al-Aqabah after sunrise. If the crowd is overwhelming, you may stone after Dhuhr or in the evening.

Bismillah, Allahu Akbar

“In the name of Allah, Allah is the Greatest.”

Offer the sacrifice (Qurbani/Hady)

Wajib
After stoning Jamrat al-Aqabah

After stoning, offer the Hajj sacrifice (hady). This is wajib for those performing Hajj al-Tamattu and Hajj al-Qiran. For Hajj al-Ifrad, there is no obligatory sacrifice. Most pilgrims purchase a sacrifice voucher from an authorized slaughterhouse in advance, and the animal is slaughtered on their behalf. Allah says: 'So pray to your Lord and sacrifice' (Quran 108:2, Sahih International).

Shave or trim the hair

Wajib
After the sacrifice

After the sacrifice, shave the head (halq) or trim the hair (taqsir). Shaving is more virtuous for men. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'O Allah, have mercy on those who shave' three times before saying 'and those who trim' (Sahih Muslim 1301). After shaving or trimming, you have achieved the first tahallul (partial release from Ihram). All Ihram restrictions are now lifted EXCEPT sexual relations with your spouse.

For Men

Shaving the entire head (halq) is preferred and earns more reward. If you choose trimming (taqsir), cut evenly from all parts of the head.

Perform Tawaf al-Ifadah

Wajib
After shaving/trimming, anytime on the 10th or later

Travel to Masjid al-Haram in Makkah and perform Tawaf al-Ifadah (also called Tawaf al-Ziyarah). This is a pillar (rukn) of Hajj, and Hajj is incomplete without it. Circle the Kaaba seven times counter-clockwise, starting from the Black Stone. There is no Raml (brisk walking) or Idtiba (exposing the right shoulder) in this Tawaf. Pray two rakahs behind Maqam Ibrahim after completing the Tawaf. The Prophet (peace be upon him) performed Tawaf al-Ifadah on the Day of Nahr (Sahih al-Bukhari 1733).

Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina adhaban-nar

“Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.”

“Glory be to Allah, all praise is for Allah, there is no god but Allah, Allah is the Greatest, and there is no power or strength except with Allah.”

Perform Sa'i between Safa and Marwah

Wajib
After Tawaf al-Ifadah

After Tawaf al-Ifadah, perform Sa'i between Safa and Marwah (7 legs). This Sa'i is specifically for Hajj. If you are performing Hajj al-Tamattu, this Sa'i is obligatory because your earlier Sa'i was for Umrah. If you are performing Hajj al-Qiran or Hajj al-Ifrad and already performed Sa'i after Tawaf al-Qudum (arrival Tawaf), you do not need to repeat it.

For Men

Between the two green fluorescent markers, increase your pace to a light jog (the valley where Hajar ran). Walk at normal pace for the rest.

“Indeed, Safa and Marwah are among the symbols of Allah. I begin with what Allah began with.”

“There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner. To Him belongs sovereignty and all praise, and He has power over all things. There is no god but Allah alone. He fulfilled His promise, granted victory to His servant, and defeated the confederates alone.”

Repeat 3 times

Return to Mina for the night

Sunnah
After Tawaf and Sa'i

After completing Tawaf al-Ifadah and Sa'i, the second tahallul is achieved and ALL Ihram restrictions are now lifted, including relations with your spouse. Return to Mina and spend the night there. If you were unable to complete Tawaf al-Ifadah on the 10th, you may delay it to the 11th or 12th, but it must be performed before leaving Makkah.

Tips for Day of Sacrifice (Yawm al-Nahr)

  • -The order of rituals on the 10th is Sunnah (recommended), not obligatory. If you shave before stoning, or perform Tawaf before the sacrifice, there is no penalty according to the majority of scholars (Sahih al-Bukhari 83)
  • -If the crowd at Jamrat al-Aqabah is dangerous, delay the stoning to the afternoon or evening. Safety is paramount
  • -Purchase your sacrifice voucher in advance from an authorized provider. You do not need to personally slaughter the animal
  • -After shaving/trimming, you may change into regular clothes and apply perfume (first tahallul). You are still in a partial state of Ihram until Tawaf al-Ifadah
  • -Drink Zamzam water after Tawaf al-Ifadah and make dua
  • -Tawaf al-Ifadah can be delayed to the 11th or 12th if the crowd on the 10th is overwhelming
