Hajj Guide

Day 1 of 5 · 8th Dhul Hijjah

Day of Tarwiyah

Makkah to Mina

يوم التروية

Prayer Notes

Shorten Dhuhr, Asr, and Isha to 2 rakahs each. Do NOT combine them. Maghrib stays 3 rakahs, Fajr stays 2 rakahs. This is the Sunnah at Mina. If you miss a prayer behind the imam, pray the shortened version (2 rakahs) if you are a traveler.

Enter the state of Ihram for Hajj

Wajib
Morning of 8th Dhul Hijjah

On the morning of the 8th Dhul Hijjah, enter the state of Ihram from your place of accommodation in Makkah. Perform ghusl (full ablution), put on the Ihram garments, and make the intention (niyyah) specifically for Hajj by saying 'Labbayk Allahumma Hajjan.' If you are performing Hajj al-Tamattu, you entered Ihram for Umrah previously and exited it; now you enter a new Ihram for Hajj. If performing Hajj al-Qiran, you have remained in Ihram since your initial entry. For Hajj al-Ifrad, you enter Ihram specifically for Hajj without having performed a preceding Umrah.

For Men

Wear two white unstitched cloths: the Izar (lower garment wrapped around the waist) and the Rida (upper garment draped over the shoulders). No underwear, socks, or head covering. Footwear must expose the ankles.

Duas for this step

لَبَّيْكَ اللَّهُمَّ حَجًّا

Labbayk Allahumma Hajjan

“Here I am, O Allah, for Hajj.”

اللَّهُمَّ مَحِلِّي حَيْثُ حَبَسْتَنِي

Allahumma mahilli haythu habastani

“O Allah, I will complete my rites wherever You prevent me.”

Recite the Talbiyah

Sunnah
From Ihram until the stoning on the 10th

Begin reciting the Talbiyah immediately after making your intention for Hajj. The Talbiyah is the defining call of the pilgrim, a response to Ibrahim's (peace be upon him) original call to Hajj. Continue reciting it frequently throughout the day and during your journey to Mina. The Prophet (peace be upon him) recited the Talbiyah loudly and frequently during Hajj (Sahih al-Bukhari 1549).

For Men

Recite the Talbiyah in a loud, clear voice.

Duas for this step

“Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am. Verily all praise, grace, and sovereignty belong to You. You have no partner.”

Travel to Mina

Sunnah
After Ihram, before Dhuhr

After entering Ihram, proceed to Mina, a valley approximately 8km east of Masjid al-Haram. Most pilgrims travel by bus, though some walk. Mina is a tent city that houses millions of pilgrims during Hajj. Upon arrival, settle into your assigned tent. The Prophet (peace be upon him) went to Mina and stayed there, praying Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha, and Fajr (Sahih Muslim 1218).

Pray shortened prayers at Mina

Sunnah
Dhuhr through Fajr of the 9th

Pray all five daily prayers at Mina. Shorten the four-rakah prayers (Dhuhr, Asr, and Isha) to two rakahs each, but do not combine them. Maghrib remains three rakahs and Fajr remains two rakahs. This follows the practice of the Prophet (peace be upon him) who shortened but did not combine prayers at Mina (Sahih Muslim 694). Spend the night in worship, supplication, and recitation of the Quran.

Tips for Day of Tarwiyah

  • -Prepare your Ihram the night before and perform ghusl early in the morning
  • -Bring your essential items to Mina in a small bag: prayer mat, Quran, medication, water bottle, and identification
  • -Use this relatively quiet day for worship and reflection before the intense days ahead
  • -Familiarize yourself with the layout of Mina and locate the nearest washroom facilities to your tent
  • -Conserve your energy. Many pilgrims exhaust themselves on Day 1 and struggle on the critical Day of Arafat
