Who is MUI?
Majelis Ulama Indonesia (MUI), the Indonesian Council of Ulama, is the religious authority whose halal fatwa underpins Indonesian halal certification. Indonesian certification now runs across three bodies: LPPOM, the Assessment Institute for Foods, Drugs and Cosmetics, carries out the halal inspection; MUI sets the religious rulings the product must satisfy, including fatwa No. 44/2020 on product naming and packaging; and the government Halal Product Assurance Agency (BPJPH) issues the certificate itself. Certification is mandatory in Indonesia for medium and large food, beverage and slaughter businesses under Government Regulation No. 42 of 2024.
