Quick answer: halal options, not a halal restaurant
Mad Mex says its chicken and beef suppliers are halal certified, but the chain and its franchisees are not. It keeps proteins separate and cannot guarantee no cross-contamination, and it says its chorizo is pork.
What Does Mad Mex Say About Halal?
Mad Mex says it is not halal certified but its chicken and beef suppliers are. That is its answer to “Is Mad Mex Halal Certified?” on its FAQ page, which we read on 31 October 2026. In full:
“While Mad Mex as a corporation is not halal certified, and nor are individual franchisees, our chicken and beef suppliers are halal certified.
We do prepare, store, and serve our proteins separately, however, we cannot guarantee there will not be cross-contamination. For the same reasons that restaurants that serve seafood or nuts-based meals warn their customers, even when serving them a non-seafood and non-nut-based dish, we offer our halal customers the same courtesy in the interests of transparency. However, please understand that we really do take every effort to take every one of our customer's dietary requirements as seriously as they deserve to be.”
Mad Mex FAQ: Is Mad Mex Halal Certified?
Is Mad Mex Chicken and Beef Halal?
Mad Mex says both come from halal-certified suppliers, but it names neither the suppliers nor the certifier. That makes it the chain's own statement. We have not seen a certificate, and we do not present the meat as certified.
The answer covers chicken and beef only. The one other protein Mad Mex names in its halal note is chorizo, which it says is pork.

Does Mad Mex Serve Pork?
Yes, its chorizo. Mad Mex says so itself in a note on halal it first posted in March 2023, which we read on 31 October 2026:
“Mad Mex does currently serve Pork. Our Chorizo. However, we do prepare, store, and serve our proteins entirely separately.”
Mad Mex: An important note regarding Mad Mex and halal
The same note says its grills are only used for chicken, the utensils used to serve pork never touch the beef, chicken or salads, and staff wear gloves you can ask them to change. It still ends with the line that it cannot guarantee there will be no cross-contamination.
Mad Mex compares this to how a restaurant warns customers about seafood or nuts. It is a fair warning, and it means the kitchen is mixed even when your order is chicken.
Ask when you order
Ask the staff to use fresh gloves and the chicken or beef utensils for your order. Mad Mex says it keeps proteins separate, so you are asking it to do what it says it does.
What Should You Order at Mad Mex?
Chicken or beef is the order Mad Mex's own statement covers. Everything else is outside what the chain has said.
Covered by what Mad Mex says
- Dishes made with chicken
- Dishes made with beef
- Proteins kept separate, by Mad Mex’s account
Not covered, so ask or skip
- The chorizo, which is pork
- Any other protein Mad Mex has not mentioned
- A guarantee of no cross-contamination
Which Mad Mex Stores Are on HalalHQ?
Three, all listed as halal options on 31 October 2026. Our Rockdale listing also notes the store is licensed, so alcohol is sold there as a drink.

The Verdict: Should Muslims Eat at Mad Mex?
It depends on whether halal-sourced chicken or beef from a mixed kitchen is enough for you. Mad Mex is open about it: not certified, certified suppliers by its own account, separate handling, and no guarantee. We list it as halal options, never as fully halal.
If that is not enough, a fully halal Mexican restaurant is the clear choice, and the directory lists them by suburb. If it is enough, order chicken or beef, ask for fresh gloves, and check the Mad Mex FAQ again from time to time, because the chain can update it.
