Why this verdict

E160c is paprika extract (capsanthin, capsorubin), a carotenoid pigment from paprika, used to colour snack seasonings, sauces, and processed meats. SANHA classifies E160c as Halaal. JAKIM Handbook 2010 classifies E160c as Mushbooh, halal as a 100% dry colour but doubtful in liquid form where the solvent must also be halal. MUIS marks E160c as syubhah, noting it is prepared by solvent extraction of the fruit pods and seeds. The pigment is plant-derived, but the extraction solvent and liquid carrier are not disclosed on the label, so E160c is doubtful by default.

Food-safety note
Permitted as a food colour in Australia and New Zealand under the Food Standards Code (Schedule 15). A natural pigment from red peppers (paprika); regarded as safe at the levels used in food. (Source: FSANZ; Food Standards Code Schedule 15.)
