Why this verdict

E1510 is ethanol (ethyl alcohol), used as a solvent in flavour extracts, food colours, and food-processing applications. SANHA classifies E1510 as Mushbooh and notes the source can be fermentation of starch or sugar, or chemical synthesis. JAKIM Muzakarah Khas (2011) permits non-khamr-origin ethanol as a stabiliser in flavours and colours when the final-product alcohol is below 0.5% and the product is not intoxicating, while khamr-derived ethanol is haram regardless of quantity. MUIS marks E1510 as syubhah, noting it is produced by the fermentation of carbohydrates and may also be obtained from ethylene, acetylene, or waste-sulphite liquors. Because the source is not disclosed on the label, E1510 is doubtful by default.

Food-safety note
Permitted as a carrier solvent for flavourings and colourings in Australia and New Zealand under the Food Standards Code (Schedule 15), at good manufacturing practice. Most of the ethanol evaporates during processing, leaving only trace residues in the final food. (Source: FSANZ; Food Standards Code Schedule 15.)
